Deer Industrial grass pavers: the basis for sustainable industrial infrastructure
Read the blog articleDeer grass pavers, a creative response to the Flemish Government’s ‘Blue Deal’
The Blue Deal is the Flemish Government’s ambitious plan to tackle ever-increasing drought and water scarcity. Flanders — with its dense population and urbanisation coupled with its water-intensive agriculture and industry, is a vital actor in the plan's efforts to combat climate change. Deer wants to do its part to meet this challenge!
The Blue Deal, fostering intensive collaboration
The Blue Deal allows the Flemish Government to simultaneously invest in smart projects and field-based actions while encouraging stakeholders like businesses, associations, farmers, research institutes and citizens to work together on these endeavours. This ambitious plan helps these parties adopt new practices so that their building and paving materials infiltrate more water, retain water for longer upstream and use less water, thereby ensuring that people and nature continue to have access to this precious resource.
The primary goal of the Blue Deal is to develop structural solutions to water scarcity. These solutions will be implemented through measures on multiple fronts, such as specific construction projects, legislative action and research and monitoring activities, accompanied by communication and awareness-raising campaigns. These targeted initiatives have the potential to bring about significant change locally in the short term. The government has earmarked a budget totalling € 343 million to carry out these initiatives.
Deer grass pavers promote local water infiltration
Due to the historic paving of our residential areas, much of the rainwater that should be soaking into the local subsoil is instead washed back into the sea via our sewers. But the very thing that will make us more resilient to drought and water scarcity is capturing and infiltrating that rainfall. Deer's practical yet aesthetically pleasing grass pavers are not only up to this task, they also nurture greener, more liveable residential and urban projects.
Blue, green and exceptionally beautiful
Grass pavers were initially considered a necessary evil. Deer, however, is the first manufacturer to prioritise permeability and contemporary design for its grass pavers. This unique focus on style elevates our grass pavers to fully-fledged design elements in contemporary architecture.
In keeping with the Blue Deal's environmental objectives, our water-absorbent grass pavers and the grasses, decorative gravel and clover we use to create green spaces advance the integration of squares, pathways, large parking areas and driveways/access ramps. This contributes to greener urban landscapes and improves the global ecological prospects.
