Big in sustainability

As an authority in concrete production for a wide range of applications, Deer carries out its daily activities with conscious concern for people, the environment and society, enabling us to minimise our impact on the environment.

All our concrete is reinforced, ensuring our products a longer life. What’s more, recycling is a standard part of our production process and our grass pavers are made from 100% recycled prefab concrete.

But we take things further than that: as an SME, we look at the bigger picture. Our catchment basin, which can hold 2 million litres of rainwater, means that we no longer use well water. We’re also convinced that the future lies with solar and wind power. With a roof covered with solar panels and the imminent installation of two in-house wind turbines, we want to make green energy an essential component of our strategy. In addition, we’re striving to minimise production waste and reduce our CO2 emissions as much as possible. Only with this corporate philosophy can we do business responsibly, taking care of the world around us.

Sustainable future plans

Our vision and action points are definitely still developing. We continue to take a critical approach, ask questions, improve and innovate. There are still ways to make our grass pavers more sustainable and we intend to continue working on doing just that. With this in mind, we’ve drawn up a list of goals that we want to achieve in the near future. We refer to this checklist all the time to assess our actions:

  • Provide a new 2,000 m³ rainwater basin for the reuse of water
  • Investigate whether recycled or natural packaging is possible
  • Make our vehicle fleet more sustainable
  • Plant trees on our buffer land behind our storage area
  • Introduce water-permeable surfacing and vegetation
  • Maintain our focus on green energy by installing solar panels on our new building and placing our own wind turbines on the site of Comines Steel, our fellow group company that produces reinforcement
  • Install two in-house wind turbines
  • Conduct research into recycled raw materials
  • Pursue our cement reduction efforts. At present we use 50% carbon-neutral materials. Our plan is to further reduce our use of cement in an initial phase; after that we will produce cement-free grass pavers (using geopolymers: low-CO2 or CO2-neutral concrete); in a final step we will then create cement-free retaining walls with our parent company Cobefa.
